Giulianova, an "ideal city" of the Renaissance

Giulianova appears today as a modern city and well-balanced, grown following the lines of the hills on which extends and respecting the sinuous border of the sea and its wide sandy beach. A lot of the urban harmony is not a case: not all of you know that Giulia (now Giulianova) was an “ideal city of the Renaissance”.
Its streets and squares, the churches and all the structures respond to the draft general functionality and liveability, rich, educated, symbolic references, inspired by the latest ideas of the humanists, such as Leon Battista Alberti and Francesco Di Giorgio Martini.

Giulianova is also rich in historical monuments, among which stand out first the Cathedral of San Glaviano, known as "la Rotonda", and the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore. The latter is one of the marian shrines most well-known in the Centre and South of Italy and every year it hosts thousands of pilgrims. It is reached by a pleasant walk along the avenue dello Splendore, where you can admire the magnificent examples of the art nouveau villas, such as Villa Castelli, with its tower covered with majolica tiles, and the Villa De Santis with its findings.
Is also worth a visit Giulianova alta and the Belvedere, from where you can overlook the sea and the town below.
