Giulianova
Giulianova, an "ideal city" of the Renaissance
Giulianova appears today as a modern and balanced town, grown up following the lines of the hilly landscape on which it extends and respecting the sinuous border of the sea and its wide sandy beach. Such urban harmony is no coincidence: not everyone knows that Giulia (today Giulianova) was an "ideal Renaissance city".
Its streets and squares, churches and all the structures respond to a general project of functionality and liveability, rich in cultured symbolic references, inspired by the most advanced ideas of the humanists Leon Battista Alberti and Francesco Di Giorgio Martini.
Giulianova is also rich in historical monumentsamong which stand out the Cathedral of San Flaviano, known as "la Rotonda", and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Splendour. The latter is one of the most famous Marian sites in central and southern Italy and hosts thousands of pilgrims every year. It can be reached by taking a pleasant walk along the Avenue of Splendourwhere you can admire magnificent examples of Liberty villassuch as Villa Castelli, with its tower covered in majolica, and Villa De Santis with its reliefs.
Also worth a visit is Giulianova alta and its BelvedereIt overlooks the sea and the town below. Whoever chooses the tranquillity of Giulianova Lido must take a stroll in the monumental waterfrontideal for beautiful walks without ever losing sight of the sea. From here, walking or cycling along the bike path, you can reach the port. The south pierwith its calenderthe ancient large fishing nets, the fishermen and the card games, is a timeless spectacle. From here you can enjoy at best the landscape that distinguishes Giulianova: the sea, the upper town and the mountains behind, among which you can also see the Gran Sasso massif.
